In our series on IBM Systems Magazine’s article “Infrastructure Matters: Myth or Truth” we have discussed six misconceptions related to IT infrastructures. We will add two more today.

Number seven is that big data and analytics solutions are expensive. That’s not necessarily true. With the right infrastructure in place, organizations can process, analyze and store large amounts of data without making huge investments. This is especially true with Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). Through a monthly subscription fee, you can leverage the latest and greatest technologies for your existing workloads and easily scale as you grow. Big data and analytics are no longer for just large corporations. Today, there are affordable options for organizations of all shapes and sizes.

The eighth misconception is that big data is best handled by commodity hardware. Unlike in the past, if you host your infrastructure on premise, you no longer need a room full of large servers for the mountains of data your business needs to operate. There are solutions on the market today that are smaller and more reliable that enable you to bring the analytics to where the data resides. And, as mentioned above, with IaaS organizations can leave it to their managed services provider and eliminate large server rooms of the past that can become cumbersome and expensive to manage.

Stay tuned for the final two misconceptions in our next blog post.
